Slackline Competitions

Slackline competitions are springing up at climbing festivals across the country so start practicing your routine!  As such, a better understanding of the tricks and scoring is necessary to make these competitions a success so we at SBI provide the following RULES, SCORING, and POINT VALUES for the tricks.

Rules: Freestyle Medley- Single competitor; Top 3 tricks scored

  • No alcoholic beverages are allowed on the slackline; Anyone under the influence of alcohol will be disqualified
  • All competitors must fill out a waiver;  Anyone under the age of 18 must have a parent sign in person
  • Time limit is 2 minutes;  If the competitor falls they may begin where they left off or from the start of the routine, time limit permitting
  • Any member of Slackline Brothers, Inc., or any judge may disqualify a competitor if they feel he/she is unnecessarily endangering themselves, other competitors, or bystanders
  • The use of props i.e. juggling clubs/balls, magazines, etc is allowed but must be pre-approved by a judge
  • Line length and height are determined before competition by the judging staff with the input of the competitors
  • Line tension is adjustable; Any competitor may ask to have the line tightened or loosened for their performance;  All feasible requests will be met at the discretion of the head judge or another appointed official
  • Time begins when a competitor steps off the ground, or in the case of a highline steps from the end;  Undue hesitation to start will result in an appropriate time penalty
  • Spotters are allowed but null any trick where they make contact with the competitor for any reason
  • Available padding may be arranged as the competitor sees fit as long as it doesn’t restrict line movement or change the nature of the trick

Rules: Chicken-Two competitors simultaneously trying to stay on the line while causing the other to fall off;  Simultaneous step-up start;  Scored best 2 out of 3 trials;  Random matching rounds until only one competitor remains;  No contact is allowed between competitors; All Freestyle Medley rules apply

Rules: Highline-Single competitor; Top 3 tricks scored; All Freestyle Medley rules apply;  Competitors must be pre-approved by a judge to compete

  • In a highline competition, the leash is tied to the competitors harness and the arrest rings/carabiners with a figure 8 knot;  The loose ends are tied with a safety knot or taped to the main strand with athletic tape;  If arrest rings are used they are doubled for aluminum or single for forged steel;  If carabiners are used to attach to the line they must be doubled, with gates opposed, screwed shut and taped (to avoid abrading the line under the high tension of a fall), and the carabiners taped tight to the leash to prevent cross loading;  All leash attachment and preparation is performed by or overseen by a judge or appointed official representing Slackline Brothers, Inc.
  • In a highline competition, the leash length is set at 3 inches longer than the distance (after being tied to harness and taped to the side) to the bottom of the competitor’s feet;  This does not include the arrest rings/carabiners
  • In a highline competition, an unarrested fall (caught by the leash) terminates the competitors run, though it can still be scored by the judges;  Unlimited arrested falls (competitor catches the line) are allowed within the time limit

Scoring:  Score is kept by 3 judges who record the TRICKS performed, the POINT VALUES, and any POINT DEDUCTIONS incurred.  Each competitor's total score is the combined total of the the three judges scores.

Deductions: Deductions are taken as a percent of the original point value;  Fall from line (50%);  Small step after trick (10%);  Large step after trick (20%);  Several steps after trick (30%);  Lack of harmony/amplitude/rhythm (10-40%);  Excessive instability (10-40%);  Poses held less than 1 second (40%);  Poses held 1-2 seconds (20%), Poses held 2-3 seconds (10%)

EXAMPLE: A forward leap with low amplitude and a little instability scores 1.5 points subtracting 20% (for lack of amplitude) and 10% (for the instability) equals 1.05 points;  Both deductions are taken from the original point value so it is a combined deduction of 30% or 1.5 X 0.7
